How should we teach reading?

Reading is complex and unnatural. Our brains are designed to use and understand oral language but learning to read demands that we use ‘brain areas that have evolved for other purposes such as language, vision, and attention’.4 The ability to read is not innate and requires systematic and explicit teaching but, once learned, quickly becomes something that the word-rich take for granted. We forget the struggle and this makes it hard to empathise with the word-poor and those who get labelled as having ‘reading difficulties’. In order to be a skilled reader we need to master both word recognition and language comprehension.

Word recognition is comprised of:

• Phonological awareness (recognising chunks of words – the syllables and phonemes from which words are constructed).

• Decoding (the process of turning symbols into sounds – generally taught using synthetic phonics).

• Sight recognition of familiar words.
